Lofts (2003)

"Soho Loft"

The architect's intention was to create a dynamic space that defined the loft experience but at the same time inject it with a more serene attitude.

The existing space, with 14-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, had previously been subdivided into small rooms. In order to reclaim the length and height of the space, a single 10-foot-high and 30-inch-thick floating wall was constructed to divide the space into two distinct zones: the public living area and the semiprivate bedroom area.

A cubelike sleeping loft, placed in the corner of the space in alignment with the end of the kitchen cabinetry and bathroom wall, incorporates a closet on the entry side and a media cabinet of the living area side.

To enhance the fluid relationship between the various spaces, the client requested a custom bed and side tables to match the pieces purchased for the dining and living areas. Furthermore, the sofa and dining table chairs were finished in the same color to create a visual link between the two areas.

The L-shaped maple kitchen cabinetry, which contrasts with the dark-stained existing floor, visually separates the living area from the dining area and physically separates the kitchen from the entrance. The only door in the loft is a 10-foot-high pocket door that leads to the private bathroom area.
